The complete guide to smiling like Tom Selleck online.

I have always liked Tom Selleck, he is just cool. Recently I made a typo “:{)” while chatting to my friend on Skype and I thought goodness that looks a lot like Tom Selleck. I don’t know many people who won’t get this but why that looks like Tom is because of his signature Moustache.  Anyway so I decided to create a smiling like Tom Selleck online guide, so here it is the complete (not endorsed by Tom, but sure he will approve) guide to smiling like Tom Selleck online.

If you need more than just online moustaches but can’t grow your own then you should have a look at this plushtache, click here to check it out.

If you can't grow a real one (or even if you can), a Plush Moustache is the next best thing.

Blank canvas is to be created on

I love blank Moleskines and Munnies (by Kidrobot), they just look so beautiful with out my scribbles on it. The problem with this is I tend to keep these blanks forever just blank with nothing on them sitting there waiting for a face. So I was looking at one of my Munnies given to me by a friend a long time ago and decided fuck it, I am going to scribble.

At first I had no idea what to do, looking at anything blank with a marker in your hand is scary. So I drew some eyes, a nose and eventually this simple little guy came about. Now he is nothing spectacular, but I like that; I like that he isn’t over illustrated.

It’s not the best colouring in job seeing that I used a whiteboard marker to do it, and frankly ended up with more black on my hand. I first used a fine line pen to draw the borders but like I said using a damn whiteboard marker sucks.

He created the iPad and all were pleased

This product was probably the most anticipated product of the last year, no other product on the internet created as much hype as this one. However I hear some people say the Apple iPad isn’t up to snuff. That it doesn’t have all the features it should have, I say fuck that it has all the features I expected and anticipated it to have. I’m not looking to replace my iPhone or my laptop with this device. I don’t need it to a mono-device that satisfies all my needs.

I initially expected nothing more than a bigger iTouch, which in my opinion is a dumb product. It’s an iPhone without the phone part kinda silly why bother. Now where the iPad succeeds for me is that it has the size I require to sit downstairs in my lounge and read my books, or comfortably wiki while watching TV. I really needed nothing more than a browser, email and digital book reader.

I can understand the application as a digital clip board for doctors and all its other values but I do think some of the reasons people it is a failure is simply not true. My first argument is 64gb is more than enough space, again it’s not there to replace your main machine and storage. A removable battery, why?! You will replace your whole device before you would need to replace your battery. HDMI port, again why!? Why do you want to project onto bigger devices from it, that isn’t its job. This is a personal device, your little viewer allowing you to relax without the extra bulk of your laptop but with the extra size not in your smart phone. The size of the screen has to do again with the best median, its not only for your video watching pleasure while say on a plane trip or something but more so for reading. SO I would say the size is suited to reading but by the looks of things video doesn’t do too poorly either.

The only features I agree it lacks is one multi-process and iSite. Multi-process is useful for when you want to have skype going while reading, or a new mail comes in. Then again if you are in your lounge reading or listening to your music do you really want that disruption? The iSite is a pity I can imagine that would have been a perfect device for it. You sit in your lounge fire up skype, chat to your folks in your hometown, or partner on a trip or something.

The key thing here is Apple makes a device for a specific purpose and the limitations and restrictions shape and keep that purpose. It isn’t a tablet PC, hence it doesn’t run full OS X. If they wanted to created a full blown working machine in tablet form they would have.

Then the design, I believe they maintained the look of the iPhone for a reason. The reason is consistency, there is nothing worse than schizophrenia in branding and products. Keeping it consistent will allow Apple to move the products to the next generation uniformly, I would imagine the next move would be to go toward the pro version stylistically speaking – or at least of what I have seen with the iPhone 4 speculations. The iPad already has hints towards the pro look as you can see from the back of it.

All and all I am very happy with the iPad it is exactly what I have been wanting and expecting.

In sherwood forest there is a man

And that man shouldn’t have been Russel Crowe. I am talking about the 2010 make of Robin Hood it’s another action packed Riddley Scott movie that has too much of a resemblances to Gladiator. The movie seems really awesome, lot’s of fighting and bad tempered men – see the trailer – but I think they made a casting mistake. When the trailer started and I saw Crowe rising out of the water I thought that’s weird the action starts with Little John? Yes I thought Crowe would have been best suited as Little John in this one, his bulk and bruteness is perfect for that role – as opposed to Kevin Durand whom I like and could do that role justice. However Crowe would get the role before him if the choice was between them, purely because of their rankings.

Who do I think should have been Robin Hood then? Well don’t laugh at me but I think Robert Downey Jr. he has the right Robin hood attitude I think, young spirited and he can do a decent fight scene. Then I think Anthony Hopkins would have been an awesome King Richard, and I think Lady Marion should have been played by Scarlett Johansson, using Mark Strong was an awesome idea his career is doing well and he is a great actor.

However I think the movie will be awesome, my post is just about perhaps a more refined cast.

Have another smoke, you’re awesome!

Anyone that knows me well enough, knows that I hate smoking with an intense passion. I am often replied to with a “this is my vice, leave me be I’m not hurting anyone”, and the honest answer is you are hurting far more than you know. You think that the little stick of 1) paper, 2) tobacco and 3) cellulose acetate is your problem, you think this doesn’t affect anyone else. Well let me ask you this what is the value of smoking and what is the impact on the environment for every cigarette you smoke.  Do you know what the paper compound you smoke is made of and where it comes from, do you know what the environmental sustainability is on the plantations that produce your beloved fast burning paper. Do you know where you tobacco blend comes from, do you know what the environmental impact is there? Do you know that the tobacco in your cigarette was more than likely sourced from more than one country, which means there is a massive transport cost involved to just make the product that’s not even its distribution. Do you even know what cellulose acetate is. Do you know what combination of toxins your burning cigarette produces?

I honestly don’t care that people get cancer from smoking, or get serious heart diseases I really don’t. Why and how can I be so insensitive?! Well you know what the cost is of you “enjoying” your vice, you know what the cost is to yourself. However you don’t know or care what the cost is to me, the people living in an near the plantations and the environments getting destroyed so that you can savour that vice once more. Do you know that the tobacco industry has the following real effects it exacerbates poverty, contributes to world hunger, does severe damage to the environment, it reduces economic productivity and is a gross waste of labour, capital and resources. Then you still have to light the cigarette. There is also nothing governments can really do, the corporations who has you addicted are so powerful that they simply tell the governments what they will do and won’t do – not ask.

So there are some questions and statements you need to be able to answer and live with if you smoke. I’m not done yet though, did you know that most smoking is done by people who KNOW BETTER it’s done by people who have the choice to say no, 85% of the 1.3 billion people that smoke come from developed nations. Fires that have been caused by smokers have since 2000 cost more than $27 billion do you know what a gross waste of money that is, and what that money could have done to help the environment you are destroying. The plantations required to produce the little things you burn contributes to the destruction of more than 1.3 million hectares of land a year.

Now when you smoke who is being affected more you, me or the environment what else can we do with the money you through away, what else can be done with the land destroyed so that you can have that vice? Think about that, think about what you will leave behind when you are gone will you be one of the many contributors to the destruction of our planet or will you be one of those trying to stop those who don’t care?

There is another form of smoking that’s become a bit more popular solving a few of – what smokers see as – the major issues in smoking such as no tar, ash, carbon monoxide,  fire hazards, yellow teeth, smoky smells, many chemicals and finally cancer and that is electronic cigarettes. Now I am happy about only two here the fire hazards and carbon monoxide that all, people don’t realise that the nicotine in the cartridges still needs to come from somewhere and and that somewhere is tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum). So what I said earlier about the plantations of tobacco that help destroy our planet still stands true, I think it might actually worsen the situation. Why, well because the dry weight of tobacco only yields 0.6 to 3.0% nicotine that means that 97% of the crop is disregarded. Also smokers will now smoke more because you can again smoke in doors with the electronic cigarettes and at your desk so I can a massive increase in consumption and with a yield of say 3.0% per plant we are in trouble! Loads of trouble!

How much do you know about nicotine, smoker? Did you know that nicotine functions as an antiherbivore chemical with particular specificity to insects; therefore nicotine was widely used as an insecticide in the past, and currently nicotine analogs such as imidacloprid continue to be widely used. So is this a good thing to be smoking? DO you know what the repercussions are of the electronic cigarettes, I know you’re definetly not because the companies who produce them say the health effects of using electronic cigarettes are currently unknown. The Canadian government has gone as far as advising people against this form of smoking with a concern that you risk a chance at nicotine poisoning. This makes sense because you intake will potentially increase substantially. The World Health Organization proclaimed in September 2008 that it does not consider the electronic cigarette to be a legitimate smoking cessation aid, and demanded that marketers immediately remove from their materials any suggestions that the WHO considers electronic cigarettes safe and effective.

I know there are many other plantations destroying the environment everything from cotton, tea, soya beans (yes hippies you contribute to the destruction of the planet just as much), coffee and so on but these things have tangible uses tobacco has none. The destruction of the afore mentioned plantations can be controlled by managing  your consumption.

Generally at 6+/- billion people on the planet managing our consumption of any resource is vital, but in my eyes managing the consumption of tobacco is not an option it needs to be stopped an those plantations should be reassigned to a new type of crop or returned to it’s natural state. This change will never happen unless ignorance is remedied and smokers stop smoking, the corporations will just keep filling your mind with its bullshit until you die an unpleasant death.

So light up another one, because you’re awesome!

Picasso came to visit

I just got the coolest app ever for my iPhone, the app is Photoshop for the iPhone. It’s really cool, i grabbed a photo from my library and messed around with it quick and you have some options. The usability is great very intuitive, obviously it’s limited but hey who’s going to do a full project on their phone anyway right?

About the photo the little girl in it is my six year old niece she is adorable but she has a shit load of energy. I had to babysit her a few days and the only way to keep her out of trouble while I work was to let her cover my blackboard wall.

My office was filled with chalk after she left but in her wake she left a few nice masterpieces featured in the photo. Kids drawings are awesome because they really don’t give a shit and they draw you how they want to see you or the most prominent thing about you. In her case though boy or girl you have a crown and wings :)

So this whole post was done with my iPhone, from taking the photo, to editing it, down to where the post was written and published from.

Write the code right

As someone who as been through all the teething pains of html up to date I have noticed quite a few things. The first is that web designer & developers care little about content, its just another blob to move around. Their documents semantically mean nothing. There is no logical structure to it once you remove the styling, even now with such a high conscience of the need for a semantic structure they still fail. I think they fail because previously they did what it took to get it to look right using the wrong and I assume simplest means. Now we cater our content to SEO, snake-oil merchants concoct these elaborate tales of why you need a shit structure in your code. For instance according to the rule your company name should not be an H1 tag it should be some superfluous tag because the h1 is reserved for the page title such as say “about us“.

I think that is ridiculous to change the meaning and hierarchy of the content to allow a search engine to  better find your pages. The content is what it is and shouldn’t be massaged to suit each flavoured search engine. When you look at a book you don’t see the name of the book on the cover changed to some saucy name which is featured in the book. The book title is always on the cover, it is always the H1 tag, then each section has a title which is your H2 tag and then each chapter has a chapter heading which is your H3 and you finally have in context headings which your H4 tag satisfies. I’m not going to go down into H5 and H6 now.
So now my thinking is if everyone uses the right structure it would make sense for the search engines to give as much priority to the H2 tag as it does to the H1. The H1 is the where am I and the H2 is what is this. Is this making sense, I hope so.

The next part is the content tags such as blockquote, p, address, strong, em, underline, ul, ol, dl, br, img and a these tags are used for content. You don’t substitute a p for a div with styling or a strong, em or underline with a span with styling. Once you remove the styling that content looses it’s meaning. A p cannot contain an address, blockquote, ol or ul these are specialised p’s, a p can only contain a span, strong, em, underline or a. Don’t use the br for anything other than breaking a line, don’t use it to space things that is where the style sheets comes in.

Here is semantically correct html body, with everything in its right place.

You get the point I hope. It’s pretty simple actually if your document makes perfect sense without styles or attributes then you have done it right. With the example at content level it doesn’t matter whether or not you will be using vertical or horizontal navigation. It won’t matter whether or not the products will be side by side in little rectangles. That only matters when it is styled and as the code is here – with the addition of some classes and perhaps a div or two – you could easily achieve your styling objective without removing the meaning. A div used correctly will not affect your meaning at all for instrance we could make the following changes and it will still render the exact same way when styles have been switched off.

So now we have content, and a potential structure for our page. The next that needs to happen is the design needs to be applied that would be all the images, colours and so on important for the design but not important in terms of raw information. Doing it in this way as described allows you to branch and get a very good print document with very little effort.

So everything said above summarises to this:

  • Content and it’s hierarchy is the most important get it first
  • Create a structure, a sort of framework which can be modified with styles.
  • Apply the visual design over the content and structure
  • General note on naming of ids and classes the ids need to concisely explain what THAT element. The classes in each step needs to again concisely explain what is being defined, because a class is abstract you can have multiple on a page as long as they mean the same thing and do the same thing on the same type of tag. A class Product on a UL should mean the same on an LI and if it is intended to behave differently then name it so such as Products on a UL and Product on an LI
  • You should never have your content in all lower case or all upper case this should be taken care of with styling you content should be as natural as possible.

I am aware that what I am saying here is very basic stuff – very basic – but I have never seen it done right. Very rarely do you see a perfectly formatted document, not even the guys who preach it. The reasons I hear why guys don’t do it right is because they say they don’t have time to mess around with this, the irony is doing it this way makes the creating part way faster and maintaining way easier. The most important thing remember though is always get content first, you need it to make you information architecture and interaction design decisions as well as your visual design. If you design something without context, then its art not design. The meaning of the design is then removed from the thing it self and in all cases on the web that thing is information and the delivery there of.

Google Nexus One

I got a review earlier about the Google Nexus One and what struck me the most is how shit the design is, it is really awful. It looks clumsy, with a bunch of buttons that could have been handled with gestures more efficiently. So I had my moleskin open in front of me as usual and started just sketching my idea of what it should look like – ignore the display in my sketch I was doodling.

I am thinking instead of a half ball as the activation you have a track pad where a lingering push down serves as the activation or gesture swipes mean different things, however for those who like tangible buttons so you can simply do a quick press over the required function as well. The phone should have a curved back sharp edges at the top and bottom but soft edges on the side for a softer grip. The battery should not be removable, why, because you will buy a new phone long before you need a new battery these days so in making the battery built in you save space and can focus on more features and better design.

I would make the device a dark gunmetal brushed steel, with the track pad black matt allowing for a smoother swipe, the phone should be slim to give it a more edgy feel. I like it when my phone hides in my pocket where I can forget its there. The ear piece is at the very top of the phone at an angle where it can project most effectively when on speaker and conceal when against your ear. The mouth piece is on the bottom so that your cheek, palm or fingers can’t cover it and you would speak directly past it so that your breath doesn’t muffle your conversation.

I just feel a little undone by Google, is this really their best try. Even the unpacking looks sad, I mean look at the components how they are wrapped. This is half the experience of owning this phone and its crap, like you just bought a $5 not $500 phone. Then if you look at the back there is this crap image of the android logo holding a flag of a QR code, and this camera lens that looks like it was previously the periscope of a world war II submarine.

With all the cash Google has couldn’t they swipe a designer from BMW, Samsung or even Microsoft all of whom have designs leagues better than this – yes I think the Zune is a far better design. The scary thing is this phone will be a hit, the market needs it to be because Apple is cleaning up – because their products look great and function just as well. However the reason why it will be a hit – or seem like a hit – is the audience, the tech-savvy loud mouth who likes supporting the “underdog”. Massive write-ups will happen for this phone in tech crunch and the like but come on people you can see from the photos it was a great try at entering the phone market in the early 90’s not now.

Dressing a skeleton

Dressing a skeleton means that I have this artistic talent that is just dying away, I have been a little slack with my drawing in the last few months and in general in the grander scheme of things. I use to draw daily and somehow I now draw maybe once a year, so from now I am going to try and doodle, draw, paint or whatever two pages a week in my moleskin.

Why this sudden decision, well I was looking around on flickr as I do and I got inspired I guess. Also maybe a little jealous of the amazing things people create, I can appreciate their creations but as any other artist knows creating is different to appreciating someone else’s creations.

I will do my best to update my blog with a few pages but don’t hate me if I don’t, drawing it will take enough out of my routine of work. ;)
